Cagrilintide

Also known as CagriSema (with semaglutide), AM833

The trial results are strong, but they are for a combination with semaglutide that is still waiting on regulators. Anything sold online as cagrilintide is not the trial drug.

What the evidence shows

  • In REDEFINE 1, 3,417 adults without diabetes lost 20.4% of body weight over 68 weeks on the combination with semaglutide, against 3.0% on placebo.[1]
  • In the same trial, the combination led to more weight loss than either drug on its own.[1]
  • In a body-scan subgroup, about a third of the weight lost was lean tissue rather than fat.[1]
  • In REDEFINE 2, adults with type 2 diabetes lost 13.7% against 3.4% on placebo.[2]

Known risks

  • Stomach side effects were reported by 72.5% of people on the combination, against 34.4% on placebo.[2]
  • Unapproved GLP-1 type products sold online have been linked to dosing errors and fakes.[3]
  • TGA testing found unapproved peptides often do not contain what their labels claim.[4]
